The purpose of the dress code is to help us create an atmosphere at Dakar Academy that will distinctly promote learning and the development of Christian character. DA seeks to cultivate in students a desire to be attractive and respected because of who they are rather than because of what they wear. Clothing that is offensive, inappropriate or immodest detracts from these goals. During the school day, and while attending school events, students are expected to wear clothing that will reflect purity in thought and action. This dress code applies to all students although some latitude is given to elementary students.
Students are to wear clean, neat, modest clothing.
All clothing should reflect modesty and good taste. Specific expectations are detailed in the sections below.
Jeans and Pants:
• Skinny jeans and regular jeans should not be immodestly tight. They are too tight if they follow all the contours of the body—one should be able to see creases and folds in the material if the item is loose enough. The best indication of appropriate tightness is that material can be pinched without stretching the article of clothing.
• Skinny jeans or other form fitting pants which do not meet the criteria of modesty stated above may only be worn with a top that covers the hips. (Please note that female hips include the rounded portion of the hip, not just the hip bone.)
• Pajama pants are not appropriate school attire unless approved by Administration for a school activity.
• Boys’ pants should cover the top of their underwear.
Shorts:
• Shorts also should meet the same standards for tightness as jeans and pants.
• For normal daily wear, sports practices, P.E., and for off campus DA sponsored activities, shorts should be no shorter than the fingertips when standing with arms hanging straight down. Spandex shorts may only be worn under other shorts. The outer shorts must meet the guideline above. All shorts must be worn as they were intended to be worn. When sports teams are playing in an African context, care must be taken to wear longer shorts in order to be culturally sensitive.
• Shorts may not be rolled or pulled up to be made shorter than allowed.
• Sophees brand, or its equivalent, are not acceptable.
• Shorts must always extend below the hem or tail of the shirt or blouse.
Leggings:
Any skin-tight pants or leggings (such as spandex) must be covered by an over-garment on the body. This over-garment must be at least mid-thigh length. It may be a top or a dress that comes at least to mid-thigh. (An approximate measure of mid-thigh is where the tips of the fingers reach when standing up straight.)
