In societies with advanced systems of division of labor, people tend to live highly segregated lives, and are thus increasingly dependent on the media for information about events outside their own immediate experience. To this extent, contemporary societies can be claimed to be characterized by the mediation of much of our social experience. Indeed, it has become common to refer to the contemporary world as comprised of mediated or mediatized societies.
