A communication benefit of sermon structure is that it gives guidance and pace to both the listener and the preacher. If I have four points which support the M.P.S., then I know that I have a certain amount of time for each. This helps me with the pace of my message. One of the most challenging aspects to preaching to youth, particularly, is keeping an effective pace. A carefully crafted outline helps me guide them through the sermon without putting them to sleep or overwhelming them with too much material. The outline will also help the audience know where I am going, and when the plane is landing. By actually handing out the outlines, I think that the congregation is more likely to sit through a forty-minute sermon if they see the big picture in front of them
